Sargento also recalled some products that were packaged on the same line as the affected cheese. Listerosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating the source and extent of the contamination and determining how many retailers received these batches of cheese. These products were packaged at Sargento's Plymouth, WI, facility using the cheeses manufactured by Deutsch Kase Haus. The manufacturer is recalling lot numbers 110316V02, 110316V03 and 110316V04.

Due to the recall GIANT Food Stores has removed the products in question from sale.

The affected products are the 6.84-ounce packages of Sargento's Ultra Thin Sliced Longhorn Colby with sell-by dates of April 12, 2017, and May 20, 2017, and the 8-ounce Chef Blends Shredded Nacho & Taco Cheese with sell-by dates of June 14, 2017, and July 12, 2017. All Meijer-branded "Colby Cheese" and "Colby Jack Cheese" sold in Meijer in-store deli counters are included in the recall.

Sargento Foods Inc. announced the recall on Friday.

The recalled cheeses would be in plastic deli packaging with printed labels with UPCs 215927xxxxxx or 215938xxxxxx.

Customers who have purchased these products should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to GIANT/MARTIN'S for a full refund.
