Dane Piedt included in Test squad for New Zealand series

Broom, who has played 30 ODIs and 11 Twenty20s for New Zealand, takes a solid first-class record into his first Test.

Taylor was injured while batting in last week's test in Dunedin. "From a bowling perspective Boult is a huge loss".

Tim Southee is expected to return after being sidelined to make way for an extra spinner in the opening Test at Dunedin, and Matt Henry has been added to the squad and is likely to play if Boult is ruled out.

"For me it's just a case that you've got a guy, you've managed to keep him quiet through the one-day series, and that as a team is pretty important", du Plessis said yesterday.

New Zealand: Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Kane Williamson (captain), Neil Broom, Henry Nicholls, James Neesham, B.J. Watling, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Jeetan Patel.

Southee admitted that the XI was far from settled: "There's still a couple of question marks over a couple of players".

Also in Patel's favour was having claimed Quinton de Kock's wicket in his past four innings, although du Plessis said the prodigious young gloveman did not consider himself Patel's bunny.

South African captain Faf du Plessis, however, could barely contain his excitement at the state of the wicket and New Zealand's injury woes. "We're looking at possibly, maybe, one but highly unlikely", he said.

"I said before the series that if we can get rid of Williamson and Taylor there's a lot of pressure on the rest of the batting lineup", du Plessis told reporters.

This has meant going into a Test with only two frontline seamers.
