The Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries has set the Indian Telecom Industry into a tug of war after announcing its Reliance Jio before five months.

In a bid to retain the 100 million subscribers that Jio had accumulated since its launch - courtesy of its industry disrupting free 4G data and calls - Reliance launched the Prime membership at a modest Rs.99 for an entire year.

The Rs.303 plan gives a Prime member 30GB of data for one billing cycle with the FUP capped at 1GB per day, while a non-Prime member receives merely 2.5GB data.

Reliance #Jio officially announced that #JioPrime Users will get "Buy One Get One Free Recharge" Offer who recharge before 31st March.

Idea Cellular is also offering a Rs. 348 plan where users will get unlimited calls with no strings attached.

Vodafone and Idea Cellular, India's second and third-biggest telecom operators, have also come up with new plans with daily data and free unlimited voice calls for prepaid customers to counter Reliance Jio Infocomm's data-rich offers starting 1 April. Airtel customers can opt for the new plan online from Airtel app and continue to avail valued 1GB data per day for 30 days, on a recharge of Rs 345 per month.

A Vodafone spokesperson said the company offers "various segmented propositions" that are valid only till 15 March. The company has unveiled a Rs. 346 plan under which its customers will get 56GB of 4G data with a validity of 56 days. The promotional offer is only available to 4G handset owners only.

Bharti Airtel chief Sunil Bharti Mittal recently acknowledged the tough competition in the telecom sector induced by Reliance Jio. The new Jio plan will cost less than Rs 10 per GB, but the plan is not FUP free. The price of two new plans is Rs.342 and Rs.346. Users can subscribe for Jio Prime membership by paying Rs. 99, and thereafter enjoy 1 GB data daily with unlimited calls and messaging for just Rs. 303. (Note: We are talking about the Rs. 303 plan on Jio Prime).

The Rs. 549 Airtel recharge pack comes with the caveat that users are only allowed 1,200 minutes of free calls (local + STD) in a week.

"We believe this will increase the bundled voice and data offering and protect ARPUs, as consumer wallet share may remain same or increase over time but with higher proportion of data offerings", analysts at Motilal Oswal Securities (MOSL) said. However, if you get a Jio SIM from March 4, 2017 onward, you'll automatically be a Prime Member. However, you can check your eligibility for the pack by signing into your account in the "My Idea" app.
