The closures include eight stores each in Texas and Minnesota and seven stores a piece in Pennsylvania, Illinois and MI.

The Foxcroft Towne Center is down to two anchor stores, now that J.C. Penney is closing up shop as part of the national retailer's overall plan downsizing plan, company officials said.

The retailer is far from being the only one facing headwinds from online retailers.

Eight will close in Minnesota and seven will be shut in both MI and Pennsylvania.

As a result of the store closures, the company announced, the distribution center in Lakeland, Florida will close in early June, at which time operations will transfer to the company's logistics center in Atlanta.

J.C. Penney's decision not to close local stores differs from that of other major retailers in recent months. Roughly 5,000 will be affected by the closures.
