Lotus Elise launched with new lightweight Sprint edition

Lotus has revealed a new Sprint edition of its famously-light Elise sports vehicle, which makes extensive use of carbon fibre to reduce the car's weight even further.

What do you think of the new Lotus Elise Sprint?

Sprint trim line is available on the 134 horsepower 1.6-liter naturally aspirated Elise Sport and the 217 horsepower 1.8-liter supercharged Elise Sport 220. It sheds 41kg compared to the regular roadster, meaning it dry weight is now just 798kg in total.

The last Sprint edition was the Esprit, which is a legendary Lotus and perhaps why the modifications are extensive. "It should weigh substantially less and, it is a fantastic achievement from Lotus in ensuring that the fully type approved new Elise now dips below the 800 kg barrier". It can be had on both the standard Elise and the Elise 220, giving them a power-to-weight ratio of 168hp and 257hp per tonne, respectively ─ more than what the forthcoming Alpine A110 can do. All these changes will make the Sprint accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds, while the supercharged 220 will get there in 4.1. The Sprint is marked out with unique design tweaks, including a matte black rear fascia, black wheels, subtle side stripes and Sprint badging. Its interior has been revised, borrowing an open-gate gear selector mechanism from the Exige Sport 350. The Elise also gets a revised centre console and new graphics on the instrument panel.

Actually, no. Well, sort of. The achievement is said to represent the biggest weight cut since the introduction of the first-generation Elise. Not a lot, admittedly, but it could make life that little bit less awkward.

The regular 134bhp 1.6-litre Sprint manages the same dash in 5.9sec.

The result? The new 2017 Lotus Elise Sprint, with a nifty 41 kilogrammes shaved from the kerbweight. The vehicle is 23kg lighter than its predecessor, but with all lightweight options included that number increases to 40kg.

The new Elise Sprint goes even further.

The basic Elise Sprint will land in showrooms this spring, with United Kingdom pricing starting at £37,300 (~$46,100 USD). That's £5000 more than the standard "Sport" models in each case.
