NCAA Touranment: Kansas Jayhawks Basketball vs UC Davis Aggies Preview

Either UC Davis or North Carolina Central will earn its first NCAA Tournament win on Wednesday night. A No. 16 seed has never defeated a No. the NCAA tournament, and UC Davis (23-12) will try to become the first.

KU has been a No. 1 seed in the tournament seven times in the last 11 years, but this is the first time the Jayhawks have been matched with a team that had to play its way into the tournament.

- Kansas basketball coach Bill Self said Thursday that he did not expect guard Josh Jackson to elevate his game in an attempt to atone for recent mistakes that cost Jackson a game and the Jayhawks a victory heading into the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles came within one point of the lead with less than two minutes remaining, but UC Davis hit just enough free throws to ensure that the Aggies stayed in front with a safe buffer in place.

"And we're just proud of how far he came so far throughout his year, and we're just focused on today and we're not really anxious about anything off the court". Like he said after the game, he's not afraid of anybody and I really respect hearing that from him. He's trying hard to get here to cheer on, obviously, his Mustangs - he recruited those guys, he and Jank (SMU coach Tim Jankovich) - and, obviously, to watch us play, as well.

The Braves (21-10) led by 14 with 15:38 to go, but let the Jayhawks back in the game with three consecutive turnovers with around the five minutes left.

As for the Aggies, they seem ready to dance with the Jayhawks.

Aggies head coach Jim Les is no stranger to achieving NCAA Tournament success at mid-major programs.

In 2005-05, Les took his alma mater Bradley to the tournament, where it reached the Sweet 16.

"It's kind of cool (they're here), I've got some friends on the team, a couple guys I've been knowing for a long time". "We should've been better prepared for this game". "He gave me that offer, and I took the offer because it was the only offer I had". "I tell them all the time there isn't anything I didn't experience from being a guy that came off the bench the last guy on the bench to being a starter to being the leading scorer to being the guy who scored the least. You just gotta play in one to experience it".

"And when things are going great, they don't necessarily need our staff as much". To me that's my value to them because they all go through those journeys along the way during a college career. But it's when things aren't going as well that they turn to you and look for answers, and we want to make sure we are able to provide them and navigate them through those tough times. We got to practice and I found out we weren't even playing today. "I really like them".

UC Davis turnovers, however, helped the Eagles hang around. "And I have a lot of coaching friends around the country". It's pretty interesting to get that, but I'm very grateful for it.

"We have a chip on our shoulder, individually and collectively, " said senior guard Darius Graham.

"Pressure is walking outside of your home every single day having to make a life and death decision to go back in and pressure is your mother struggling to keep the lights on and having a hot meal on the table".
