Penélope Cruz to Play Donatella Versace on 'American Crime Story'

In her US television debut, Cruz will star opposite previously casted stars Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss as designer Gianni Versace and serial killer Andrew Cunana, respectively.

She is the latest Hollywood star to be coaxed by American Crime Story and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy to the small screen and follows in the footsteps of fellow Oscar winners Cuba Gooding Jr (American Crime Story), Jessica Lange (American Horror Story), Julia Roberts (The Normal Heart), Susan Sarandon and Catherine Zeta-Jones (who both starred in Feud).

Executive produced by FX mainstay Ryan Murphy, American Crime Story is following up its acclaimed debut season The People v. O. J. Simpson with a varied slew of true crime stories. Cruz will be portraying the fashion icon Donatella Versace The season will cover the murder of Donatella's brother Gianni Versace, the original head of the fashion empire. It will be based on the book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History.

The second season of FX's American Crime Story, about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, has yet to set a premiere date.

In 2009, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, along with a BAFTA, an NYFCC and an NBR Award.

"No, she will not [play her]", Murphy told reporters in January. She just finished filming Murder on the Orient Express.

The limited series show, created by Ryan Murphy, centers each season around a famous true crime - the first season was the award-winning "The People v. O. J. Simpson"; the second season, now in development, focuses on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. "But I would love to work with her on something in the future".
