Russian Federation may ban 'Beauty and the Beast' over its 'gay propaganda'

THE Russian government is under pressure to ban Disney's live-action movie Beauty and the Beast for allegedly contravening a 2013 law that prohibits "gay propaganda" aimed at children.

The initial furor began after the film's director said last week that the Le Fou character would be shown wrestling with and then embracing his same-sex attraction toward the Gaston character, calling it "a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie". "The obvious, blatant, shameless propaganda of sin, of perverted sexual relations".

As the film's release date draws closer, Disney's upcoming Beauty and the Beast could be barred from the country due to its depiction of a gay character.

In Bill Condon's film, LeFou (Josh Gad) has a crush on Gaston (Luke Evans).

Bill explained the moment as "somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston". "He's confused about what he wants. And (actor) Josh (Gad) makes something really subtle and delicious out of it". In fact, a couple of theaters have already threatened to pull out from showing the movie because of the supposedly "gay" moment.

Owners of a Buffalo, New York, drive-in theater said over the weekend they were "extremely disappointed that a fellow drive-in business owner would go out of their way to publicly diminish a group of people based upon their personal beliefs".

"Can I just tell you?"

"It's all been overblown", he told ScreenCrush.

"I'm convinced that the main task of the state regarding children is the protection of childhood and youth from the dirt of the world, preserving children's purity, guard our children from the harmful and risky phenomena", Milonov said, according to Mashable.

Even a simple film review for The Hollywood Reporter attacked people who might disagree with the movie. "It's one that has something to offer everyone".

"Digging a little deeper and understanding to not be fearful of things you don't know or people who look a little different to you...fear is not a good thing to fuel", he said.
