Joining them in the top five were Berkshire Hathaway founder Warren Buffet ($75.6 billion), Amazon head honcho Jeff Bezos ($72.8 billion), and Spanish business tycoon Amancio Ortega ($71.3 billion).

Other notable newcomers to the list include: Australian Manny Stul, whose toy company created the popular Shopkins collectibles; American Yvon Chouinard, the founder of outdoor gear maker Patagonia; and Juan Francisco Beckmann Vidal of Mexico, who is chairman of tequila maker Jose Cuervo. Last year, he ranked No. 7. Those with local ties included Medford native and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ($47.5 billion net worth, 10th place), Dorchester native and casino magnate Sheldon Adelson ($30.4 billion, 20th), and Boston Latin School alum and former Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone ($5.4 billion, 288th).

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is the biggest dollar gainer on Forbes' 2017 World's Billionaires List, in a year when 56 percent of billionaires saw their fortunes increase.

The list, published Monday, tracked the mind-boggling fortunes of the world's elite and assesses the overall financial trends of the world's richest people. The total combined net worth of this year's billionaires is $7.67 trillion, up from $6.48 trillion last year.

The 2017 is longer than it's ever been before - Forbes estimates there are now 2,043 billionaires worldwide, up from 1,810 in 2016.

Simon, 82, the co-founder of Simon Property Group, has a net worth estimated at $2.8 billion, the same as past year, Forbes said. I'm worth much more than you have me down [for].

Forbes also released Monday how much President Donald Trump is now worth. But the list also contained 15 new "self-made" women, mostly from Asian countries, including Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao of budget airline VietJet air.

Gates maintained his No. 1 spot for the fourth year in a row, with his $86 billion fortune up from last year's $75 billion.
