U.S. survive scare in Colombia opener

Until today, we had no idea which teams were going to move along in the tournament and play in San Diego, but now we know of three of the four teams: USA, Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The Americans, who play Canada on Sunday, have failed to reach the three previous WBC finals.

A crowd of 22,303 watched the USA keep its streak alive of advancing to at least the second round of the WBC, as it clinched the runner-up spot in Pool C behind the Dominican Republic, which advanced earlier in the day with an extra-inning win over Colombia.

The U.S. fell to 1-1 in the tournament and is in jeopardy of being eliminated in the first round.

With the victory, the Dominican Republic sealed their place in San Diego as the Pool C winners and giving the United States control of their destiny.

US starter Danny Duffy finished his four scoreless innings of work with just two hits surrendered.

The bullpen combined for five scoreless innings led by Tyler Clippard's two flawless innings. Tyler Clippard retired all six batters he faced, striking out four. The atmosphere around the hotly anticipated U.S./Dominican Republic showdown in the World Baseball Classic felt less like a baseball game than a World Cup match, the setting less like Florida than Santo Domingo and the nine Dominican hitters in the opposing dugout less like a lineup than a firing squad.

"It was insane, it was loud, the fans they never give up".

Canada starter Ryan Dempster, who came out of retirement to pitch in the WBC, recorded just two outs and lasted only two-thirds of an inning and was charged with three runs.

FA Cup Report: Chelsea v Manchester United 13 March 2017
United looked to be in control of the early exchanges until Herrera was sent for with his second booking of the night. Herrera's dismissal for two fouls on Eden Hazard gave the advantage to the Blues midway through the first half.

Holding a 5-3 lead as he entered the game in the eighth, Miller, whose brilliant performance for the Cleveland Indians left that team on the verge of a World Series title nearly five months ago, surrendered a three-run homer to Nelson Cruz and a solo homer to Starling Marte to send the Americans to a staggering loss in a game in which it had led almost the entire way. Buster Posey, Chris Archer, Andrew Miller, Jonathan Lucroy, Giancarlo Stanton, Andrew McCutchen, Paul Goldschmidt, Daniel Murphy, Nolan Arenado and Adam Jones will all be sporting the red, white and blue this month. His counterpart, Edinson Volquez (Miami Marlins), will take the mound first, playing host in his new Major League Baseball home ballpark.

MIAMI -In the days leading up to his departure from Orioles camp for the World Baseball Classic, Welington Castillo admitted how torn he was about leaving his new team for an extended amount of time. The game they played on Saturday night did not disappoint.

"For us to compete at this level, we have to have all of our professional players", Whitt said.

The Dominicans extended their winning streak to 11 games in the tournament.

"In Little League, you get emotional when you hit one like that", Cruz said in Spanish. The United States never won it.' I don't even want to talk about it.

"What happened it's very unfortunate, beyond who was to blame for it, it's something that can't happen".

"Thursday was loud", said Cruz, referring to the Dominican's opening game against Colombia.

Puerto Rico finished atop Pool D by going 3-0, including a dominating victory over the Venezuela team that was thought to be one of the early favorites to win this year's WBC.
