Amid the fallout, she eventually dropped out of the governor's race and successfully ran for the lieutenant governor seat. Montgomery was the birthplace of the Confederacy, after all, and the state motto is the defiant "We dare defend our rights".

Ivey, 72, was sworn in as the 54th Governor of the conservative southern US state by Acting Chief Justice Lyn Stuart.

ELLIOTT: She acknowledges the task ahead. "I ask for your help, your patience as together we steady the ship of state and improve Alabama's image".

ELLIOTT: Ivey the second woman to serve as Alabama governor. She was governor for about a year after state law kept her husband, a Democrat, from running for consecutive terms, according to the New York Times.

Ivey grew up in rural Camden, Ala., raised on a farm.

She characterized that transition as a "positive opportunity" for Alabama. Before being elected lieutenant governor in 2010 and then re-elected in 2014, she served as state treasurer for eight years.

She graduated from Auburn University in 1967 and has worked as a classroom teacher, banker, administrator in higher education and assistant director of the state's industrial recruitment agency. "But I pledge to each of you that I will do my very best", she said. She's not rash, which is good.

January 27, 2011: After being elected to two terms in the Alabama House, the dermatologist and one-time Baptist deacon is inaugurated after running on a platform of increasing jobs and not accepting a salary until the state reaches full employment. Boring is not a bad thing.

Ivey is taking the reins of a state in political turmoil, and not just because of the circumstances that catapulted her into office. She was meant to oversee the Pre-paid Affordable College Tuition program, or PACT, and garnered much of the blame when it lost almost half its value after the Great Recession. "She tells you exactly what is on her mind". You bet your sweet bippy. Governor Ivey and I have always had a great working relationship and I look forward to continuing my work as President Pro Tem and presiding officer of the Senate. How do you handle a crisis? Political columnist Steve Flowers spent 20 years in the Alabama Legislature and has been watching the scandal unfold. "We can begin to put this behind us".

House Speaker Mike Hubbard was convicted of felony ethics violations and was jailed, and Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore was suspended from office for telling probate judges to ignore a federal court order to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

FLOWERS: You think about it. And the state Democratic Party's structure is a skeleton operation compared with the GOP in Alabama. That's an old political saying. He said he expects the governor to have moving vans in play on Friday.

"I have decided that it is time for me to step down as Alabama's governor", Bentley said at a press conference Monday evening.
