DI council votes for early signing period

The NCAA announced on Friday that the Division I Council voted "yes" to a proposition that will allow a second National Signing Day for football in December. Let's break down the biggest changes. Exceptions exclude current student-athletes who have been enrolled full-time at the school for at least two years and prospective or current student-athletes who suffer an incapacitating injury (effective for recruits who sign after August 1, 2017). Under this new proposal, the early-signing period would start in mid-December.

Has early college recruiting gotten out of control?

"At this point I believe an early signing period, I'd like to see what would happen instead of wondering what would happen", Richt said told 247Sports in an interview last November. For 2017, the dates will be December 20-22. The coaching staff can go into the final recruiting period knowing what players will be coming in and where they may need to push to fill holes in the roster. "For a conference such as ours, we anticipate we are going to get teams into the playoffs".

Alternatively, early signing period could really benefit WSU. And it's not just the uncertainty surrounding new coaching hires, but the assistants those new head coaches are bringing in, too.

Furthermore, the early signing day could decrease options for players who are still trying to qualify academically, and that's especially true at places like Stanford - as coach David Shaw has indicated - that have more stringent academic requirements and a longer process for admitting recruits.

Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband ties the knot with his girlfriend Priya Sachdev

The new rules would allow high school seniors to sign during a 72-hour window beginning on the third Wednesday of December, which is now used for mid-year JUCO transfers. The other significant change to the recruiting calendar would allow recruits to make official visits between April and June of their junior year in high school.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who chairs the Division I Football Oversight Committee, said he expects the vote on a early signing period to pass. They are given Grant-in-aid agreements (binding for the school, not the player), but just kind of show up, enroll, then they're added to the roster and scholarship allocation.

The Council tabled a proposal that would have prevented coaches from offering scholarships to recruits before September 1 of their junior and defeated a measure that would have made 12-game FCS schedules permanent.

• Adding a 10th assistant football coach, which would not go into effect until after the upcoming season. For instance, USC coaches are permitted to coach at a three-day UH camp on the Manoa campus, but they would have to deduct those three days from their 10-day limit. Nebraska can officially add that position on January 9.

Two-a-day practices have been eliminated due to safety concerns. Now with the opportunity to take official visits in the spring, clearly a much less hectic time, recruits can better utilize all five of their official visits rather than trying to cram them in during the season or in the mad rush towards that Wednesday in February.
