Galaxy S8: More screen and elegance, but a hefty price tag

Kantar's data also shows that about 28% of Samsung's installed base upgraded to a new Samsung smartphone. It was Samsung's best Galaxy model ever-not so much the new Galaxy S8, which goes on sale today and ships on April 20. Samsung started shipping the new device for those who purchased it through preorders which ran from April 7-17.

You've probably already guessed that we're quite fond of the display on the Galaxy S8.

Would it indicate some sort of a sickness, prove once and for all that you've succumbed to the zombie plague sweeping the planet, if you got your eyes lasered just so you can unlock your mobile phone faster?

The iris scanner, center, and camera lens, right, are shown on the back of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, Monday, April 17, 2017, in NY. The 5.8in QHD+ OLED panel, which Samsung is calling an "Infinity" display thanks to its curved edges, which are no longer reserved for a standalone "Edge" model, and dominates the front of the device thanks to the S8's aforementioned 84 per cent screen to body ratio.

Typing a message with one hand on larger phones can be hard, but my colleague Avery Hartmans found it was much easier to do one-handed typing on the Galaxy S8+ than it was on the iPhone 7 Plus. As someone with small hands, reviewing a 5.8in smartphone is typically a daunting experience, but with its dimensions of 149x68.1x8mm, and with a weight of just 155g, the Galaxy S8 isn't much bigger than the 5.1in Galaxy S7, and barely bigger than our 4.7in iPhone 7.

After spontaneous fires that forced the recall of the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung is playing it safe on the battery and subjecting the S8 to tighter inspections. We suggest this because Samsung's construction of this device is very similar to last year's S7 and S7 Edge, with a complicated process involved that risks shattering both the front and the back panel of the phone.

The bigger screen fits more lines of text, but doesn't necessarily make video more immersive. You can tinker with that manually — but for $100, you shouldn't have to. Samsung aims to sell more than 60 million units of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus worldwide by the end of this year. Tapping on the clock now displays other widgets - we like the one that lets you control your music without having to unlock the phone. That's how well the new face recognition system works: if you're in front of your phone when you switch it on, you won't even notice it's analysing your facial biometrics and deciding whether to unlock itself. But you have to be careful not to smudge the adjacent camera lens by mistake now that the scanner has been moved to the back. The possession of this feature is also unique to Samsung as Apple gives no option to extend iPhone 7 display. The idea behind Bixby is that it will be a much more capable, integrated assistant than Siri or Google Assistant, capable of carrying out tasks like sending photos within an app as well as integrating reminders and so on. It also has Bixby Vision, a feature that allows users to use the camera to scan objects and get more information about them, such as where to buy them.

Samsung throws in a pair of AKG premium headphones, valued at about $100.

The S8 seems like a bargain for only $100 over the S7 at launch.

But there are times you'll need to use more than face recognition to secure your phone. Once you get your hands on it, though, it soon becomes apparent that the S8 is not only different to its predecessor, but also to the huge number of high-end smartphones also battling for your attention.

The Galaxy S8 owners have posted photos of their devices with a reddish tint to Instagram and local technology forums such as Ppomppu. But for everyone else, Samsung could have also offered a lower-priced alternative with fewer goodies. For instance, if you have a twin or sibling that looks like you then you are out of luck as the phone may not be able to tell you both apart.
