Guardiola: We were finally able to make 20-25 passes

Not least from Sergio Aguero.

"The performance is so good considering where we are playing and that is why we are so, so happy".

Manchester City next take on Southampton in the Premier League this weekend.

Claude Puel's side, who were attempting to win three successive league games for the first time under the Frenchman, remain in ninth place.

Southampton has been tight at the back, especially on their home turf. But City's failure to capitalise on superior possession seemed to inspire the hosts. Dominating possession, City had their pockets picked in midfield and Saints broke with goal, nice work from Nathan Redmond resulting in Manolo Gabbiadini pulling the ball back for Dusan Tadic, who struck over when he had time to control the ball. However, his shot ballooned well over the bar.

"I think Southampton are having an exceptional season", Guardiola said. My feeling before was he was just waiting to score a goal.

As Guardiola joked recently, such a record made him the "exceptional one", although the City manager believes there is much work to do if he is to replicate such success with his current employers. They faced only one shot on target against Hull last weekend, and conceded a sloppy goal from it.

Vincent Kompany observes at Southampton. It was from his boot that most City attacks started. West Brom had their chances, but Fraser Forster was fantastic in goal for the Saints. The referee wasn't interested, preferring to award City a corner rather than a penalty, from which Yaya Toure headed harmlessly wide.

"In the first half we controlled the game but Southampton were good out wide".

But it always lurked.

Jesus Navas can't do a lot of things.

It was a moment that drew plenty of debate on TV and social media alike as Forster did get fingertips to the ball to divert it behind for a corner, but only after going through Sane to do so. No wonder he celebrated with such vigour in front of the ecstatic City fans.

Shane Long was replaced shortly after coming on as a substitute against Man City after a staff mix-up on the Southampton bench. Forster could not scramble across in time.

Aguero's fancy footwork helped him get past two down the left channel, before a fantastic clipped ball across the box found an unmarked Davis Silva at the back-post. The ball then did something unexpected: it landed in the arms of the City goalkeeper, who tumbled to the floor apparently in relief.

Manchester City should come out the winners of this match. Every concievable emotion must have coursed through his veins as he celebrated with the City supporters, themselves delighted with what they had seen.

He said: "Yes disappointment but not just about the result but about our play because I think we can do better".
