Deputies early Monday morning responded to a report of a mountain lion entering a home and snatching a small dog.

But even in Pescadero, Zuno said, this sighting of an apparent mountain lion is rare. The figure snatched the 15-pound dog from the foot of her bed, then walked out.

Instead, around 3 a.m., she woke to the sound of the dog "barking aggressively", and when she turned toward the sounds she saw the "shadow of an animal enter the room, take the small dog from the bed" and walk out.

However, both the Sheriff's Office and state wildlife officials agreed Monday's incident was extremely unusual, Zuno said.

The bedroom had French doors leading to the outside partially open to let in fresh air. Fought said she did not see the lion's head.

When the resident went out after the dog, she discovered large wet paw prints at the bedroom's entrance. In bucolic downtown Pescadero, the animal encounter perked up ears and evoked some alarm that a mountain lion would get so close to a human dwelling.

Authorities have contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to see if a follow up investigation is necessary. Salvador Zuno, spokesman for the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. "We had one open a few inches or so, I don't know, maybe six or eight inches wide", Fought told ABC11's sister-station ABC7 News.

But Ms Fought and her daughter are astonished that a mountain lion could have been so bold.

Those residing in mountain lion territory are also warned to avoid attracting deer, mountain lion's main prey, keep brush trimmed to reduce places where they can hide; and consider installing motion detector lights around the house.

"Obviously they're very shaken up by this, they lost a family member and it was a surprise in the way it happened", Zuno said.

'It's hard to fathom, ' she said.

After calling 911, deputies came to search the area and said the paw prints resembled those of a mountain lion.
