After reminiscing about working with Murphy on Chappelle's Show, the usually-private comedian called Mayer a "sight for sore eyes" on such an emotional day.

The comedian then joined Mayer in a rendition of the singer's song "You're Gonna Live Forever in Me", saying, "it reminds me of my friend".

"Much more than a friend", Mayer said, "and author of my favorite phrase, 'habitual line stepper'". Murphy was best known for being a writer and cast member on "The Chappelle Show" and for starring in the television series "Power" produced by rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.

Dozens of other stars have also paid tribute to the late Chappelle's Show star, including Russell Simmons, Chris Rock, Ice T, Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, George Lopez and Gabrielle Union.

The older brother of comedy icon Eddie Murphy, Charlie had a successful career in his own right. Prince later regretted turning down the offer, Chappelle said.

Mayer and Dave also reminded the crowd just how amusing Murphy was by referencing one of his greatest lines ever from "Chappelle's Show".

Dave said, "He told me after the fact, 'I wish I had done the sketch'". He entertained the crowd by joking about hanging out with Mayer and the time he asked him to play in his "White People Dancing" sketch.

Night at the Museum wasn't one of Charlie Murphy's bigger roles, but Murphy movie fans loved his cameo part in the movie. "We love you, we loved your comedy, we loved your storms and we loved your spirit".
