Sadio Mane: Out for the rest of the season

Liverpool winger Sadio Mane's operation to rectify the meniscus damage in his left knee is pencilled in for Tuesday morning.

The Senegal global sustained meniscus damage in his left knee during last weekend's Merseyside derby against Everton and it was initially hoped he could avoid surgery.

Mane opened the scoring early on in the clash with Liverpool's city rivals but limped off the field 12 minutes into the second half following a challenge by Everton full-back Leighton Baines.

But an expected recovery period of two months means he will miss the remainder of the Reds' Premier League run-in.

Reds supporters have reason to be fearful as Mane, who joined from Southampton for £34 million last summer, has been the team's most potent weapon.

But after undergoing surgery on Tuesday, the 25-year-old sent a positive message to Liverpool fans.

"He will get a longer break and will be ready for next season", the German said.

Meanwhile, the club have announced they will play a post-season friendly in Australia.

Mane joined Liverpool from Southampton during the summer for a fee of around £34million and it would be fair to state that the Senegalese worldwide has more than managed to repay the Reds investment, scoring 13 goals as well as providing 6 assists in 27 appearances this season.
