Verstappen passes 9 cars in one lap in masterful China race

However, not for the first time in his short but stellar F1 career, the Dutchman made light of a challenging situation by blitzing his way back into the top five by the time the field had all switched to dry tyres.

"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't intentional, but I knew there was no harm done".

Verstappen was fifth in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, while team-mate Daniel Ricciardo crashed out after a miserable weekend.

Even though Red Bull is still off the pace of the Mercedes and Ferrari cars, Verstappen believes his team could contend for victories again soon.

"There were probably 100 less overtakes than we saw a year ago, but the ones we did experience were much better to watch and much more memorable", said Sky F1's Martin Brundle.

"We shouldn't make it too dramatic, we just need to find a good balance on the vehicle from high-speed to low-speed so we are working hard to get new parts here for that to make that balance off-set a bit closer to each other".

"Personally Im happy with what I was able to get out of the auto this afternoon but obviously as a team and as a driver we want more", he said.

"We got close to Max and we put ourselves in his position, struggling with grip", said Ricciardo.

"I don't think we have understood it well enough yet to get the most out of it with set-up and ride heights, that sort of thing".

"I think he's right up there", Horner said.

"That first stint was frustrating", Ricciardo said.

Of course, it was entirely possible given how well the talented Verstappen has been driving since making a huge splash at last year's Spanish Grand Prix, which he won in his first start for Red Bull after being promoted from feeder team Toro Rosso. I don't feel we're at more of a deficit now, but obviously we want to be closer.

"I'm happy to have completed the race and gone through the motions, I'm satisfied with that".

"Then I was struggling a bit with the balance of the auto because I didn't run a lot in qualifying and I don't think it was flawless in the race, particularly with the cold temperatures".
