Westbrook clinches triple-double average for season

Oklahoma City point guard Russell Westbrook tied an National Basketball Association record Friday night, becoming the first player in 55 years and the second overall to average a triple-double for an entire season.

Russell Westbrook is now averaging a triple-double for the season.

He appeared focused on getting those necessary six assists out of the way early on Friday, perhaps to his detriment.

"I'm honored just to be mentioned in a conversation with Oscar Robertson", Westbrook said.

December 23: Westbrook leads the Thunder to a win at Boston with 45 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

"I want to see him reach history".

Russell Westbrook #0 of the Oklahoma City Thunder moves the ball past Devin Booker #1 of the Phoenix Suns during the first half of the National Basketball Association game at Talking Stick Resort Arena on April 7, 2017 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Devin Booker doesn't want anything to do with the home crowd cheering for the other team's player, but if that's going to happen he's going to answer like it's a road game.

Marjanovic on his career-best performance: "I'm more happy because we won this against a very, very good team".

Westbrook finished two assists shy of claiming a record 42nd triple-double of the season as he finished with 21-points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Westbrook said after spending nearly an hour working on his shot in Phoenix's practice gym after his poor shooting performance. I think there was maybe a stoppage of play around 3:45, 3:40, somewhere around that point. Unfortunately, his record only lasted 77 days and sadly for Harden, nobody is going to remember that Westbrook was only able to break his record because the game against Orlando went into overtime.

The Hawks didn't use any of their five starters against LeBron James's Cavaliers who had their four game win streak snapped.

You can mewl that the triple-double is arbitrary or that it's only meaningful insofar as it is an interesting quirk of the stat line, rather than a legitimate achievement in its own right, or that none of this means so much for a relatively middling team such as the Thunder.

"I'm a competitor, and I'm at my home arena, and you're hearing chants to another guy", Booker said. T.J. Warren scored 23 for Phoenix.

He missed his first 11 shots before sinking a 17-footer with 50.4 seconds left in the half. Robertson averaged 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists for the Cincinnati Royals in 1961-62. The season series finished tied 2-2. It's what cost him his chance at triple-double No. 42, which would have put him one ahead of Robertson's single-season record. It's the first triple double against the Celtics in 230 games.

He had seven straight triple-doubles before failing to get there the last two times.

The Thunder will be back in action on Sunday in Denver when it takes on the Nuggets. And while Westbrook was stuck in neutral, the Suns sped away.

Marquese Chriss' 73rd start is the third-most in a season by a Suns rookie.

The Thunder travel to Phoenix tonight and the Suns are presenting Westbrook with yet another opportunity to make history.

On Friday, it was an ugly loss that ended in an arguably unsportsmanlike way due to Phoenix's unwillingness to finish the game with dignity.
